Certified Nursing Aid and Medical Office Assistant Programs
Poverty to Prosperity (P2P) initiative has added two additional program opportunities for local students; Certified Nursing Assistant and Medical Office Assistant. The Certified Nursing Aid (CNA) program is a well-established, accredited program of TVCC. This is a 155-hour course, which includes clinical experience at local healthcare agencies and a CPR class.
Upon successful completion of the 155 hours OBSN approved Nursing Aide Course, students will receive a Certificate of Completion. This certificate will enable students to take the OSBN state test. When this exam is passed, the student will be issued the designation of a “Certified Nurse Aide”.
The Medical Office Assistant pathway certificate program is part of a brand new Medical Assistant program currently being developed by Treasure Valley Community College. The goal of this pathway certificate is to develop employment ready students for the field of medical office support.
The Medical Office Assistant program currently consists of 6 courses (total of 27 credits) that provide students with entry level skills for an administrative medical office support position. The result is a Medical Office Assistant Career Pathway certificate is to lead to a certification as a Medical Assistant which is an additional 26 credits to be completed after graduation.
The Medical Assistant program is not yet an accredited program through the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School (ABHES). Application for accreditation will begin in Fall of 2016. Once accreditation has been approved students completing the Medical Assistant Program will be eligible to sit for the national credentialing examination, resulting in a CMA (Certified Medical Assistant).
Administrative Medical Assistant 112 course is the foundation. This Entry level class focuses on administrative skills performed by the Medical Assistant in the ambulatory care setting. The course provides an introduction to the medical assistant profession, examines medical law and ethics, principles of confidentiality and medical office function. Introduces the medical assisting student to learn practical applications of billing medical insurance both manually and electronically. The course is designed to instruct the student in all phases of the administrative medical assistant.
